I caught the mega-slab at Clear Lake on Saturday, December 10th, 2005 in the early afternoon. The immediate weight was 4.25lbs! (the official California State record is 4.1lbs.)
I made the mistake of keeping the fish out of water in an ice chest for about 5 1/2 hours. He stayed alive when I got him home and put him in water (although he never regained full strength)
I had him weighed officially at Broadway Bait Rod and Gun on Monday December 12, 2005. by then he was 3.93lbs - less than 2 ounces from the official recordI The fish died 3 hours after it was weighed. So the official record books will not have my entry.
What I appreciate most is that my dad, (Steve Currington) who is a Crappie fishing expert, said to me on the phone, “I have to pay homage to you son, excellent job” I have the Fish in the Freezer (vacuum sealed of course) until I have it mounted.
